Railing Naming

My last blog talked about an AU Class I attended about Revit’s railing system. One thing that Brian Mackey glazed over in his AU class were the best practices for naming the railing systems. For any of you that know me or have read this blog I am a big proponent to naming conventions. Naming conventions are one way to organize the data of your model. Organized data means you can find objects in the model easier.

Back in 2009 I wrote a blog talking about the pattern by which I define the naming of families (Family Naming)

The object name

  • System Families/Catagories
  • Kind of Element / Shape / Feature /Plant Division
  • Application/ Kind of Leaf
  • Configuration/Plant Type

For the Railing system this pattern to me means
  • System Families/Catagories= Type
    • Gaurd
    • Hand
  • Kind of Element / Shape / Feature=Panel configuration
    • Height
    • Type
    • Number
  • Application
    • Stair
    • Ramp
  • Configuration=Extension type
    • Floor
    • Post
    • Wall

Using this pattern an example of this naming convention is

Guard-42 PIPE-Ramp Floor
Hand-36 PIPE-Stair Wall
