Container – Beating the Housing Crisis in London

The housing crisis is starting to reach a critical point in west London. Families on lower incomes struggle to afford the astronomical rents and people in traditionally well paid jobs cannot afford to buy.

In this video we visit QED Sustainable Urban Development and Ealing Council, who are working together to help people in need of emergency accommodation in the west London area. Making use of fallow land and brownfield sites, the project focuses on modifying stock piled shipping containers into modular homes that can be ported between temporarily available spaces.

We look at the tech behind the buildings and why up-cycling shipping containers appears to be the best solution to homing people quickly and cheaply. We also look into what the future may hold for modular housing and how you may soon be able to design and order your own.
