We often underestimate the difficulty inherent in making even a small change. How difficult is it to take a different route home to avoid the construction on the way you have gone for years? Imagine what it is like as an architect if you were told that you would not be using drawings anymore to describe the buildings you design. No, we are not suggesting that anyone take the pencil, pen or marker out of your hand – those will always be there. We are also not terribly hung up on whether paper is involved – “paperless” was a much misunderstood promise of the late 20th century – it confused the issue as people moved to digital paper but did not change or improve the process of describing the buildings they design.

We are suggesting the elimination of traditional drawings and making decisions of any kind about a building based on digital modeling. The drawings can still be created from the data behind the model, but why create them if the model tells a better story. Regardless of…
