Using high resolution 3D scans of the hatch captured inside the National Air and Space Museum by Autodesk and the Smithsonian Digitization Program Office, engineering student Andrew Barth was able to reverse engineer and CAD model the functioning components that make up the various intricate mechanics of the hatch using Autodesk Fusion 360 (free for students and hobbyist). By importing the scan model for the hatch, produced by the Smithsonian Digitization Program Office, he was able to directly measure features and components in order to create accurately-sized parts.
